Lunch aboard H.M.Y Brittania

On June 26, 1959 the United States and Canada celebrated the completion of the St. Lawrence Seaway, a system of locks, canals, and channels that opened up the Great Lakes to ocean-going ships. To celebrate this great engineering feat, Queen Elizabeth and President Eisenhower both participated in the opening ceremonies on the High Level Bridge between Cornwall, Ontario and Messena, New York. The Eisenhowers were invited to a luncheon aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia.

French cooking is not something I know well, so I had to do a bit of research to unravel this menu. The meal started with oeufs mollets, an fancy egg on toast. Demi poussin poele st lambert are pan-fried baby chickens. Pommes nouvelles rissolees are fried new potatoes. Choufleur mornay is cauliflower in mornay sauce.

Although the details of this event, including the lunch, were planned well in advance, Queen Elizabeth wrote a warm letter inviting the Eisenhowers to join her. In his thank you letter, President Eisenhower called the lunch and cruise the highlight of the day.
