Grilling Like Ike

For many Americans, summer means grilling. Cooking outdoors can be a relaxing break from the stressful routine of life, even for someone like President Dwight D. Eisenhower who sometimes found time to grill at the White House.

Eisenhower’s mother taught him how to cook and he pursued this hobby throughout his life. Whether grilling fresh caught trout over an open fire, making his famous vegetable soup, or barbecuing steaks for friends, Ike found joy in cooking. Like many amateur cooks he also saved recipes. His Post-Presidential Papers include a cookbook of recipes. Some are his personal recipes typed up by staff. Others were taken from publications or given to him by friends. If you’d like to try your hand at grilling like Ike, he included four very different recipes for barbecue sauce.

I’ve tried #1, a sweet glaze that was excellent on salmon, and #4, a thick spicy sauce that is perfect for beef and pork.
