Fran Smith Johnson and Mrs. Eisenhower's Recipes

 In 1946 Sergeant Frances Smith was planning her wedding to Air Force Major Burr N. Johnson, Jr.  They met and fell in love in post-war Germany.  A couple of months before the wedding Fran’s boss’s wife shared some of her favorite recipes. In Fran’s case, that was wife was Mamie Eisenhower, wife of General Dwight D. Eisenhower. 


These recipes were donated to the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library along with other papers the documented her service on Eisenhower’s staff.  Although there are a few recipes for salads and casseroles, the majority were for pies, cakes, cookies and other desserts.  There was also a list of suggestions for hors d’ouvres and a recipe for cream cheese dip.  A few of the recipes are below, but the entire set is available on my Flickr page
